Watercolor Portrait in Progress

This is my first attempt at painting a portrait with watercolors. Usually I opt for oil paint, since it dries slow and gives a nice luminosity. Watercolors dry fast and are more watery, so I have to be careful! I stopped using acrylic paint years ago (the colors always dry a little darker than when you paint them on, making it difficult to paint the skin!).

I’m actually going to paint this portrait twice – one as a watercolor, and one as an oil painting.

The portrait is based off of a photo taken at a co-worker’s wedding about ten years ago. She is going to surprise her husband with one of them and give the other one to another family member.
