Sisters Portrait Drawing

Lately my wife and I have been talking a lot about what it will be like to introduce a sibling to our son. We’re currently reading a book called The Birth Order by Dr. Kevin Leman, and I read that introducing a sibling is akin to the ‘dethronement’ of the first child! We’ll have to make extra sure that he feels just as loved as he does now. Of course, that adjustment will be just the beginning of a lifelong relationship. With the right parenting early on, I think he’ll be such a nice older sibling.

A few days ago I finished a pencil portrait of our friends’ daughters, one of whom just turned one year old! The way the older daughter is embracing her younger sister is very sweet, and it makes me think of the many dynamics at play in sibling relationships! I hope this drawing will be a nice keepsake as they continue to grow and become adults!

Outside of the Womb

Yesterday morning I finished a pencil portrait drawing of my son from either his 1st or 2nd day of life (I say it was the day he was born, my wife says it was the day after!) Either way, he’s such an angel and looked so peaceful laying on our bed, in the very spot he was born!

Arriving to the World

This drawing is of my son on the very day he was born. We had a home birth and he came out right on our bed, just as the sun was rising! It was magical. I thank God for my wife, our midwife team, pediatric chiropractor, and doula. Their guidance and care made for the best labor we could have asked for (of course, that’s so easy for me to say, but it did go really well).

Congrats! Portrait Drawing Graduation Gift

Last weekend one of our good friends graduated from George Mason University, after beginning his college education in the U.S. several years ago. As an immigrant from Lithuania, he first started out by having to pass TOEFL exams (Test of English as a Foreign Language), and then work his way through completing a Bachelor’s degree while also working full-time. What an accomplishment! Persistent, determined work pays off. Congratulations! It’s fitting that their first child was born a few months ago and was there to witness his graduation.

As a graduation gift, I drew him a portrait sketch of him with his baby son at his thesis presentation:

Grandmother Portrait Painting – “Abue”

A few weeks ago I finished this oil portrait painting of my wife Brigitta’s maternal Nicaraguan grandmother (or ‘abuela’, in Spanish). Her name was Rafaela Corrales Toruño, and Brigitta simply called her “Abue.”

“Abue” Portrait – Oil Painting

Abue had five children, three of which emigrated from Nicaragua to the U.S. in the 1970’s. Abue also came to the U.S. to accompany her first child to come here, Tía Ligia (Tía means “Aunt”, and Tía Ligia was Brigitta’s Aunt Ligia). Then, Brigitta’s Dad came on vacation to visit, which then turned into a permanent stay! Later on, Brigitta’s Tía Cecilia came as well.  Abue’s other two children stayed in Nicaragua. So nowadays, we have family both in Northern Virginia and in Nicaragua (and in Argentina and Ecuador on Brigitta’s Mom’s side)!

I met Abue almost ten years ago, before I spoke much Spanish. Whenever I tried to speak to her in Spanish, she’d turn to Brigitta and say “¿Qué dice?”, or “What is he saying?”. I’m glad I got to experience her liveliness, kindness and family values. She was a true ‘family matriarch.’

Abue lived with Brigitta’s family during much of Brigitta’s childhood, and they spent lots of time together, abuela y nieta (granddaughter), on the famous couch shown in the painting below!
